Working Overseas as a Healthcare Professional

If you’re a healthcare professional looking to work overseas, the requirements vary based on your profession. Registered Nurses, for example, must pass an online and practical exam to test their skills, while other professions only require proof of qualifications and experience.

English Language – All Health Professions

You must successfully pass assessments offered by an accredited testing organization.

OET: Occupational English Test- Assesses the language communication skills of healthcare professionals who seek to register and practice in an English-speaking environment.

IELTS: International English Language Testing System – The world’s most popular English language proficiency test for higher education and global migration. Charkos prepares you to pass these exams by providing intensive training modules and trainer-led sessions. The proficiency requirements are slightly different in each country.

Registered Nurses

If you wish to work as a Registered Nurse overseas, there is generally a two-step assessment process.

CBT: Computer-Based Exam– The first stage involves a multiple-choice computer-based online assessment that can be taken in your own country.

OSCE: Objective Structured Clinical Exam – The second stage involves a practical exam that must be taken in the host country. OSCE requires candidates to enact a range of scenarios to demonstrate their skills. United Kingdom

Working in UK

Charkos provides comprehensive training to help prepare you for all assessments required to work in the United Kingdom, including:

English language: Currently NMC accepts two language test – IELTS and OET . The applicant must achieve an overall score 7.0 IELTS score with 7 in reading, listening and speaking sections while 6.5 in writing. OET applicants must achieve at least grade B for reading, listening, and speaking, and at least grade C+ for writing. For more details read here. CBT: NMC Test of Competence Part 1 exam is computer-based exam (CBT). The NMC CBT is intended for nurses trained outside the EU (European Union) and the European Economic Area seeking employment as a nurse in the UK.
OSCE: Part 2 of the Test of Competence is a practical exam called the Objective Structured Clinical Exam (OSCE). Candidates must pass a series of 10 stations that enact scenarios that nurses and midwives may face when assessing, planning, carrying out, and evaluating care. Charkos has developed an in-house training program covering all aspects of the OSCE to ensure you are well prepared.

Australia

Working in Australia

In Australia, you must obtain AHPRA (Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency) registration to work as a healthcare professional.

English language: For IELTS, you will need a minimum overall score of 7 and a minimum score of 7 in every four components; alternatively, for OET, you will need a minimum score of B in each of the four components you are tested in. NCLEX-RN: The National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN) is a standardized test used by AHPRA to determine if a candidate is ready to be licensed as an entry-level nurse in Australia.
OSCE: Candidates must pass a series of 10 stations that enact scenarios that nurses and midwives may face when assessing, planning, carrying out, and evaluating care. Charkos has developed an in-house training program covering all aspects of the OSCE to ensure you are well prepared.

Working in UAE

To work as a nurse in UAE, you must register as a healthcare professional with the Health Authority / Ministry

Fluent English and Basic Arabic – You must be proficient in English, as it is the primary language of healthcare delivery in UAE. If English is not your first language, you may need to provide evidence of English language proficiency through tests such as the IELTS or TOEFL. And for Arabic, while its not mandatory, learning basic Arabic phrases can be helpful during patient interactions. Prometric Exam: One of the key requirements for nursing registration with the Authorities in UAE is passing the professional examination. The exam assesses your nursing knowledge and competency and is typically conducted at designated testing centers. Charkos has developed an in-house training program covering all aspects of the Prometric Exam to ensure you are well prepared.
Dataflow Verification - The Health Authority may conduct a Dataflow verification process to authenticate your educational and professional credentials. This involves verifying your academic transcripts, professional licenses, employment history, and other relevant information with the issuing institutions or authorities.
Professional Interview - After successfully completing the assessment process and passing the exam, you may be required to attend a professional interview with representatives from the Health Authority. The interview aims to assess your communication skills, clinical knowledge, and suitability for nursing practice in UAE
